About Whippet Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts

The Whippet, originating in England as a sighthound for rabbit coursing and racing, is a medium sized member of the Hound Group, typically 18-22 inches tall and 25-40 pounds. Gentle, affectionate, and sensitive, they are calm indoors yet enjoy short bursts of speed and need daily exercise in a secure area; their strong prey drive calls for care around small pets. Sleek and deep chested with a short, smooth coat, they require minimal grooming, occasional brushing plus routine nail and dental care, and shed year round; they are not hypoallergenic and drool very little. Their fine skin and low body fat mean they feel the cold, can pick up nicks and scrapes, and may be sensitive to some anesthesia, so warmth and soft bedding help. Common health considerations include heart problems, eye issues, and dental disease, while hip dysplasia is less common than in many breeds.

When researching Whippet breeders, ask for documentation of health screening on both parents. Ethical breeders test for breed appropriate conditions through OFA, PennHIP, or breed club specified DNA panels before breeding.

Before You Choose a Whippet Puppy

Questions to ask any Whippet breeder

  2. Are the parents registered with the AKC or relevant breed club?
  3. What is your return policy if the dog cannot remain in my home?
  4. Can I visit, meet the parents, and see where the puppies are raised?
  5. Do you provide a written health guarantee and vaccination records?

About these recommendations. PuppyReports surfaces the basic health screening recommendations for each breed in accordance with the principles established by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) program. The OFA, working with each breed’s primary US parent club, sets the recommended testing list per breed. Recommendations may vary by country and region (US OFA CHIC, European FCI, UK Kennel Club, Australian National Kennel Council, etc.).
