About Transylvanian Hound Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Transylvanian Hound, also called the Erdelyi Kopo, originated in medieval Hungary where it was prized by royalty for tracking bear, boar, and lynx across the rugged Carpathian Mountains. Recognized by the AKC in the Foundation Stock Service, this sturdy scenthound stands 22-26 inches tall and weighs 55-77 pounds, with a dense, short black and tan coat that requires only weekly brushing and routine ear, nail, and dental care. Courageous and tireless afield yet calm and affectionate at home, they need vigorous daily exercise and scent work to stay balanced. They suit active families with space to roam. Common health concerns include hip dysplasia, ear infections, elbow dysplasia, bloat, and hypothyroidism.
