About Tosa Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts

The Tosa, originating in Japan, is an extra large Working type guardian breed historically developed in Kochi Prefecture by crossing native Shikoku Inu with Western mastiffs, bulldogs, and Great Danes to create a formidable sumo style fighting dog, now valued as a calm family protector. AKC classifies the Tosa in the Foundation Stock Service. Males typically stand 24.5-32 inches tall and weigh 100-200 pounds, carrying a short, dense, smooth coat in red, fawn, apricot, black, or brindle that needs only weekly brushing. Dignified, quiet, and deeply loyal, Tosas require moderate daily exercise, early socialization, and experienced, confident owners in spacious homes.

About these recommendations. PuppyReports surfaces the basic health screening recommendations for each breed in accordance with the principles established by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) program. The OFA, working with each breed’s primary US parent club, sets the recommended testing list per breed. Recommendations may vary by country and region (US OFA CHIC, European FCI, UK Kennel Club, Australian National Kennel Council, etc.).
