About Standard Schnauzer Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Standard Schnauzer, a medium sized working breed from Germany, was developed as a versatile farm dog for ratting, guarding, and driving livestock; today it is an alert, intelligent, and spirited companion that is loyal and protective yet affectionate with its family. Typically 17.5, 19.5 inches tall and 30-50 pounds, it has a sturdy, square build and a harsh, wiry coat (salt and pepper or solid black) with trademark eyebrows and beard. This high energy dog needs daily vigorous exercise and mental stimulation, plus consistent training and socialization. Grooming requires regular brushing and periodic hand stripping or clipping, along with beard cleaning; shedding can be noticeable, and drooling is minimal. Common health concerns include hip dysplasia, eye conditions such as cataracts or PRA, and some skin issues; it is not considered hypoallergenic.
