The Smooth Fox Terrier, originating in England, is a small breed in the AKC Terrier Group developed in the 18th and 19th centuries to bolt foxes from their dens during mounted hunts. Standing about 14-15.5 inches tall and weighing 15-18 pounds, they are compact, athletic, and elegantly balanced, with a short, dense, hard coat that is predominantly white with black and/or tan markings. Grooming is easy: a weekly brushing, occasional bathing, routine nail trims, and regular dental and ear care. Lively, alert, confident, and amusing, they are devoted family companions who need vigorous daily exercise, mental stimulation, and secure fencing, as their prey drive and terrier independence run strong. They suit active households and do best with early socialization around small pets.
