About Shih Tzu Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Shih Tzu, a small Toy Group companion breed developed in imperial China with Tibetan roots, was bred to be a devoted lapdog. Friendly, affectionate, and adaptable, they fit well with families and apartment living, with low energy needs met by short daily walks and play. Compact and sturdy at about 9-16 pounds, they have a short nose, large dark eyes, and a long, flowing, low‑shedding coat. Grooming is high maintenance, requiring daily brushing, regular professional trims, and frequent face and eye cleaning; they are low shedding but not truly hypoallergenic. Common health concerns include heat sensitivity and breathing difficulties, along with eye and dental issues, ear infections, and occasional knee or back problems.

Before You Choose a Shih Tzu Puppy
- Can I see health screening documentation for both parents?
- Are the parents registered with the AKC or relevant breed club?
- What is your return policy if the dog cannot remain in my home?
- Can I visit, meet the parents, and see where the puppies are raised?
- Do you provide a written health guarantee and vaccination records?

About these recommendations. PuppyReports surfaces the basic health screening recommendations for each breed in accordance with the principles established by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) program. The OFA, working with each breed’s primary US parent club, sets the recommended testing list per breed. Recommendations may vary by country and region (US OFA CHIC, European FCI, UK Kennel Club, Australian National Kennel Council, etc.).
