About Shetland Sheepdog Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts

The Shetland Sheepdog, originating from Scotland’s Shetland Islands, is a small to medium member of the herding group bred to move sheep and serve as a vigilant farm companion. Typically 13-16 inches tall and about 15-25 pounds, Shelties are bright, eager to please, and sensitive, devoted to family yet often reserved with strangers. They thrive on daily exercise, training, and mental games, with a tendency to be vocal. Their long, dense double coat sheds heavily and needs frequent brushing (especially during seasonal molts) plus occasional baths, with minimal trimming. Not hypoallergenic, they suit active homes that can meet their grooming and activity needs. Common health concerns include inherited eye issues, hip and thyroid problems, and sensitivity to certain medications, making health screening and regular checkups important.

About these recommendations. PuppyReports surfaces the basic health screening recommendations for each breed in accordance with the principles established by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) program. The OFA, working with each breed’s primary US parent club, sets the recommended testing list per breed. Recommendations may vary by country and region (US OFA CHIC, European FCI, UK Kennel Club, Australian National Kennel Council, etc.).
