About Scottish Deerhound Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Scottish Deerhound, originating in Scotland as a sighthound bred to hunt red deer, is a very large Hound Group breed prized for its gentle, dignified, and affectionate nature. Tall and lean with a deep chest, long legs, and a rough, shaggy coat in shades such as gray, brindle, or fawn, males often reach 30 inches or more and 85-110 pounds (females slightly smaller). Though calm indoors with generally low energy, they still need daily walks and regular chances to run in a safely fenced area; their strong chase instinct means off‑leash time should be managed carefully. Grooming is moderate, weekly brushing and occasional tidying help with their high shedding, along with routine nail, ear, and dental care; they are not hypoallergenic. Health concerns can include life‑threatening bloat, bone cancer, and some heart issues, and like many sighthounds they may be sensitive to certain medications and anesthesia; soft bedding and keeping them lean support joint health. Friendly and polite rather than watchful, they do best in spacious, calm households that can accommodate their size and provide gentle, consistent exercise.
