About Saint Bernard Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Saint Bernard is a giant working breed from the Swiss Alps, originally developed by hospice monks for mountain rescue along the Great St. Bernard Pass; today they’re known for a calm, gentle, and patient temperament that makes them affectionate family companions with a steady, low energy demeanor. Massive and powerful, they typically weigh 120, 180+ pounds and have a dense double coat (short or long) in red and white patterns with a dark mask; they shed heavily and drool a lot. Grooming requires patience, frequent brushing, routine ear and skin care, and regular drool cleanup, while daily but moderate exercise and consistent training help maintain fitness without stressing growing joints or overheating (they’re heat sensitive and do best in cooler climates). Not hypoallergenic, they need space and sturdy footing. Common health concerns include hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat (gastric dilatation volvulus), eye issues such as entropion/ectropion, heart disease, and orthopedic strain, with a relatively short lifespan.
