About Russell Terrier Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts

The Russell Terrier, developed in England and refined in Australia, is a small working terrier in the AKC Terrier Group, originally bred to bolt foxes from their dens. Shorter legged than the Parson Russell, they stand 10-12 inches tall and weigh 9-15 pounds, with a compact, rectangular build and a weatherproof smooth, broken, or rough coat that is predominantly white with black or tan markings. Grooming is easy: weekly brushing, occasional hand stripping for broken coats, routine ear checks, nail trims, and dental care. Bold, clever, and tireless, they need vigorous daily exercise and mental challenges, thriving with active families who provide firm, consistent training.

About these recommendations. PuppyReports surfaces the basic health screening recommendations for each breed in accordance with the principles established by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) program. The OFA, working with each breed’s primary US parent club, sets the recommended testing list per breed. Recommendations may vary by country and region (US OFA CHIC, European FCI, UK Kennel Club, Australian National Kennel Council, etc.). Always review current requirements with your breed’s parent club for your jurisdiction. Last reviewed: 2026-05-02.
