About Rhodesian Ridgeback Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Rhodesian Ridgeback, originating in southern Africa (formerly Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe), is a large hound in the Hound Group bred to track and hold big game, famously lions, and is distinguished by the ridge of hair along its back. Loyal, confident, and calm with family yet reserved with strangers, they benefit from early socialization and consistent, positive training. Adults typically stand 24-27 inches tall and weigh about 65-90 pounds, with a short, sleek wheaten coat that sheds moderately, needs minimal grooming, and produces little drool; they are not hypoallergenic. Exercise needs are moderate, daily brisk walks, runs, or play plus mental stimulation are ideal, and a secure yard helps manage their strong prey drive. Common health considerations include hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat (gastric torsion), dermoid sinus, hypothyroidism, and some cancers; responsible breeding, regular vet checkups, weight control, and routine nail, ear, and dental care support their well being.
