About Redbone Coonhound Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Redbone Coonhound, developed in the American South for night hunting and treeing raccoons (and sometimes larger game), is a medium to large Hound Group breed known for its affectionate, even tempered nature and strong prey drive. Athletic and high energy, it needs daily vigorous exercise and scent based activities, along with a secure fence and leashed walks to prevent roaming. It has a sleek, solid red short coat, long ears, and a muscular, balanced build; grooming is simple, weekly brushing plus routine ear care, nail trims, and dental care, though shedding is moderate to heavy and the breed is not hypoallergenic. Intelligent but independent and often vocal, they respond best to patient, positive training. Generally healthy, they can be prone to hip dysplasia, ear infections, and occasional bloat; keeping them lean and scheduling regular vet checks is advised. Typical adults stand about 22-27 inches tall and weigh roughly 45-70 pounds.
