About Pumi Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Pumi, originating in Hungary, is a medium sized herding breed developed as a versatile farm dog for driving and managing livestock; it belongs to the Herding Group and typically stands about 15, 18.5 inches tall and weighs 22-29 pounds. Lively, intelligent, and notably vocal, the Pumi bonds closely with its family, can be reserved with strangers, and thrives on regular training, problem solving, and vigorous daily exercise and dog sports. Hallmark traits include a square, athletic build; semi erect ears with tips that flick forward; a high set curled tail; and a curly, weather resistant coat in various colors. Grooming is moderate: comb or brush weekly to prevent matting, bathe as needed, and trim or hand scissor the coat occasionally; routine ear checks, nail trims, and dental care are advised, and drooling is minimal. Generally healthy, the breed can be prone to hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and certain eye issues; responsible breeders screen for these concerns, and while some owners with allergies may do well with the coat, no dog is truly hypoallergenic.
