About Portuguese Water Dog Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Portuguese Water Dog, a medium sized member of the Working Group from Portugal’s Algarve coast, was developed to help fishermen by herding fish, retrieving gear, and carrying messages, and today is valued for its high energy, intelligence, and affectionate, eager to please nature. Athletic and sturdy with webbed feet and a curly or wavy, single layer coat that sheds little and is generally considered hypoallergenic, it thrives on vigorous daily exercise, swimming, and consistent training; typical adults weigh about 35-60 pounds. Grooming needs include brushing several times a week, professional trims every 6-8 weeks, and careful ear drying after water play. Health considerations can include hip dysplasia, inherited eye conditions such as progressive retinal atrophy, and certain breed specific genetic disorders, so responsible screening is recommended. With proper activity, structure, and companionship, they make lively, loyal family partners.
