About Portuguese Podengo Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts

The Portuguese Podengo, originating in Portugal, is an ancient hunting breed in the Hound Group traditionally used to track and flush rabbits and other small game across rugged countryside. Coming in three sizes (Pequeno, Medio, Grande) and two coat types, the Medio typically stands 16-22 inches tall and weighs 35-44 pounds. The wire coat is harsh and weather resistant, requiring weekly brushing and occasional hand stripping, with routine ear cleaning, dental care, and nail trims. Lively, intelligent, and brave, Podengos are affectionate with family yet independent and alert. They need substantial daily exercise and mental stimulation, suiting active households with secure yards.
