About Pointer Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Pointer, developed in England as a bird hunting gun dog, is a medium to large sporting breed prized for stamina and a natural ability to locate and “point” game. Athletic and elegant, it has a lean, deep chested build and a short, smooth coat in liver, black, lemon, or orange, often with white. Even tempered and affectionate at home but very high energy and driven outdoors, it needs vigorous daily exercise and mental engagement; a secure yard and solid recall training help manage prey drive. Grooming is easy, weekly brushing handles its moderate shedding, and drooling is typically low; it is not hypoallergenic. Potential health concerns include hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat, thyroid issues, and some eye conditions. Typical size is about 23-28 inches tall and 45-75 pounds.

When researching Pointer breeders, ask for documentation of health screening on both parents. Ethical breeders test for breed appropriate conditions through OFA, PennHIP, or breed club specified DNA panels before breeding.
Before You Choose a Pointer Puppy
- Can I see health screening documentation for both parents?
- Are the parents registered with the AKC or relevant breed club?
- What is your return policy if the dog cannot remain in my home?
- Can I visit, meet the parents, and see where the puppies are raised?
- Do you provide a written health guarantee and vaccination records?
Screened Pointer breeders on PuppyReports have submitted documentation, responded to the platform, and maintain an active PuppyReports™ Card. Research any breeder before you make a commitment.

The OFA, working with each breed’s primary US parent club, sets the recommended testing list per breed. Recommendations may vary by country and region (US OFA CHIC, European FCI, UK Kennel Club, Australian National Kennel Council, etc.).
