About Norwegian Elkhound Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts

The Norwegian Elkhound, originating in Norway as a hardy hunting companion for tracking and holding big game like moose, is a medium sized Hound Group breed with high energy, an alert and courageous temperament, and a loyal, protective nature toward family. It has a sturdy, square build with erect ears, a tightly curled tail, and a dense, weather resistant double coat that sheds heavily; expect regular brushing (especially during seasonal blowouts) and occasional baths, along with routine nail and ear care. Daily vigorous exercise and mental engagement are essential, and the thick coat means they can be sensitive to heat. Not considered hypoallergenic, the breed is generally robust but can be prone to hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, and obesity, so weight management and regular veterinary screening are recommended.
