About Newfoundland Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Newfoundland, originating from Canada’s island of Newfoundland, is a giant Working Group breed developed for water rescue and hauling, prized for its calm, gentle temperament and devotion to family. Massive and powerful with webbed feet and a thick, water‑resistant double coat (black, brown, gray, or black‑and‑white Landseer), they need moderate daily exercise, ample space, and careful management in hot weather. Grooming is substantial, frequent brushing, heavy seasonal shedding, and notable drooling. They are not hypoallergenic. Common health concerns include hip and elbow dysplasia, heart disease (especially subvalvular aortic stenosis), cruciate ligament injuries, bloat, and cystinuria; responsible breeders screen for these. Typical size is 100, 150+ pounds and about 26-28 inches at the shoulder. They thrive with early socialization, kind training, and opportunities to swim.

The OFA, working with each breed’s primary US parent club, sets the recommended testing list per breed. Recommendations may vary by country and region (US OFA CHIC, European FCI, UK Kennel Club, Australian National Kennel Council, etc.).
