About Mountain Cur Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts

The Mountain Cur, originating in the United States and developed by frontier settlers in the Appalachian and Ozark highlands, is a rugged working breed in the AKC Foundation Stock Service, historically bred to tree game, guard homesteads, and drive livestock. Typically 16-26 inches tall and 30-60 pounds, they are muscular and athletic with a short, dense double coat in brindle, yellow, black, or blue, requiring only weekly brushing, routine ear cleaning, and regular nail trims. Courageous, loyal, and intelligent, they bond deeply with their handlers and need vigorous daily exercise and a job to do; they suit active rural families but can be reserved with strangers.

The OFA, working with each breed’s primary US parent club, sets the recommended testing list per breed. Recommendations may vary by country and region (US OFA CHIC, European FCI, UK Kennel Club, Australian National Kennel Council, etc.).
