About Maltese Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Maltese, an ancient companion breed from Malta in the Toy Group, was developed as a gentle lapdog and today is a tiny, affectionate, people focused dog typically 7-9 inches tall and 4-7 pounds. Calm with a playful streak, it fits apartment living and needs light daily exercise like short walks and indoor play. Its long, silky white single coat sheds very little and is often considered hypoallergenic, but it demands high grooming with daily brushing, regular baths, careful trimming, and tear stain care to prevent mats. Routine care should include diligent dental hygiene and gentle handling due to its delicate size. Common health concerns include dental disease, knee issues, airway sensitivity, tremors, and tear staining, so regular veterinary checkups and weight management are important. Overall, the Maltese is a devoted house companion that thrives on close human contact and positive, consistent training.

Before You Choose a Maltese Puppy
- Can I see health screening documentation for both parents?
- Are the parents registered with the AKC or relevant breed club?
- What is your return policy if the dog cannot remain in my home?
- Can I visit, meet the parents, and see where the puppies are raised?
- Do you provide a written health guarantee and vaccination records?
Screened Maltese breeders on PuppyReports have submitted documentation, responded to the platform, and maintain an active PuppyReports™ Card. Research any breeder before you make a commitment.
