About Leonberger Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Leonberger is a giant Working Group breed from 19th‑century Leonberg, Germany, developed as a versatile farm, draft, and water‑rescue dog and renowned for its calm, affectionate “gentle giant” temperament with families and children. Typically 28, 31.5 inches and 110-170 pounds for males (females slightly smaller), it has a thick, water‑resistant double coat in lion‑like shades with a black mask and often a mane in males. Energy is moderate, but daily walks, space to move, and mental engagement are important; they handle cold well and can struggle in heat. Shedding and drooling are heavy, and grooming is high‑maintenance: brush several times weekly (daily during seasonal sheds), bathe as needed, and maintain ears, nails, and teeth; not hypoallergenic. Common health concerns include hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat, certain cancers, breed‑specific nerve and throat conditions, and eye issues; choose health‑tested lines and learn bloat warning signs for prompt care.

When researching Leonberger breeders, ask for documentation of health screening on both parents. Ethical breeders test for breed appropriate conditions through OFA, PennHIP, or breed club specified DNA panels before breeding.
Before You Choose a Leonberger Puppy
- Can I see health screening documentation for both parents?
- Are the parents registered with the AKC or relevant breed club?
- What is your return policy if the dog cannot remain in my home?
- Can I visit, meet the parents, and see where the puppies are raised?
- Do you provide a written health guarantee and vaccination records?
Screened Leonberger breeders on PuppyReports have submitted documentation, responded to the platform, and maintain an active PuppyReports™ Card. Research any breeder before you make a commitment.
