About Karelian Bear Dog Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts

The Karelian Bear Dog, originating in Finland and long used to hunt moose, lynx, wild boar, and even bear, is a medium sized spitz currently recorded in the AKC Foundation Stock Service. Standing roughly 19-23.5 inches tall and weighing 44-50 pounds, they carry a dense double coat of coarse straight black fur with crisp white markings that sheds seasonally and needs only weekly brushing, with more frequent grooming during coat blows. Fearless, intensely loyal, and highly territorial, they require vigorous daily exercise, early socialization, and experienced owners rather than novice pet homes, and are generally unsuited to households with other dogs or small pets. Health concerns include hip and elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, hypothyroidism, and ear infections.
