About Irish Setter Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Irish Setter, originating in Ireland, is a medium to large sporting breed developed as a bird dog and prized for its speed, stamina, and keen nose; it is friendly, outgoing, and highly energetic, thriving with active families who can provide daily vigorous exercise and consistent training. Recognizable by its glossy mahogany red, feathered coat and lean, athletic frame, adults typically stand about 25-27 inches tall and weigh 55-75 pounds. Grooming needs are moderate: brush several times a week to prevent mats and control moderate shedding, check and clean the ears regularly, and bathe as needed; the breed is not hypoallergenic and drooling is generally low to moderate. Common health considerations include hip issues, eye problems such as progressive retinal atrophy, bloat (a serious stomach condition), thyroid disorders, and gluten sensitivity in some lines. With ample activity, mental stimulation, and companionship, the Irish Setter is a loving family companion and an eager field partner.
