About Icelandic Sheepdog Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts

The Icelandic Sheepdog, a small to medium spitz type herder from Iceland, was developed to drive and guard sheep and horses and today is in the Herding Group; it is cheerful, friendly, and alert, often vocal and very people oriented. Compact and athletic at roughly 16-18 inches tall and 20-30 pounds, it has prick ears, a curled tail, and a dense weatherproof double coat in various colors with white markings. A moderate energy breed, it does best with daily walks, play, and training for mental stimulation and may bark if under exercised or bored. Grooming is straightforward: regular brushing, more during seasonal sheds, keeps the double coat in good shape; shedding is moderate, drooling is low. It is not hypoallergenic. Generally healthy, but responsible breeders screen for hip dysplasia and inherited eye issues (such as cataracts or PRA), and patellar luxation can occur.
