About Havanese Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Havanese, a small Toy Group companion breed from Cuba, was developed as a cheerful lapdog and family friend, known for its affectionate, sociable temperament and moderate energy that suits apartments or homes with daily walks and play. Compact and sturdy at about 8.5, 11.5 inches tall and 7-13 pounds, it has a long, silky coat and expressive eyes; the coat sheds low to moderate but requires high grooming with frequent brushing, regular trims, and routine ear and dental care to prevent mats and infections. Generally low drooling and people oriented, the Havanese thrives on company and training games, so consistent social time and mental enrichment are important. Common health concerns include knee and hip problems, eye issues such as cataracts or progressive vision loss, allergies, and dental disease. The breed is considered low shedding and often better tolerated by some allergy sufferers, though no dog is truly hypoallergenic.
