About Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, a large Working Group breed from Switzerland, was developed as a draft, droving, and watchdog farm dog and is known today for its steady, confident, and affectionate temperament with families while remaining alert with strangers. Strong and heavy boned with a short, dense tricolor double coat, typical adults stand about 23.5, 28.5 inches tall and weigh roughly 85-140 pounds. Energy is moderate: they need daily walks and purposeful activity (cart work, hiking) but are not endurance runners and can be sensitive to heat; early training and socialization are important. Grooming is straightforward, weekly brushing and more during seasonal sheds, shedding and drooling are moderate. They are not hypoallergenic. Common health considerations include hip and elbow dysplasia, shoulder osteochondrosis, and bloat (gastric dilatation volvulus); responsible breeders screen for orthopedic and other issues.
