About Great Pyrenees Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Great Pyrenees, originating in the Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain, is a large to giant livestock guardian in the Working Group, prized for its calm, gentle, and deeply protective nature with an independent streak. Broad and powerful with a thick, weather resistant double coat that’s predominantly white (sometimes with gray or tan markings) and a plumed tail, this breed has moderate energy needs satisfied by daily walks and ample space, but benefits from early socialization, consistent training, secure fencing, and awareness of its tendency to bark at night. Grooming is high maintenance: expect heavy seasonal shedding and frequent brushing to control mats and loose hair, plus routine ear, dental, and nail care; they are not hypoallergenic and can be prone to drooling. Common health concerns include hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat, eye issues such as entropion, and heat sensitivity, so keeping a healthy weight, avoiding overexertion in hot weather, and regular veterinary checkups are important.
