About Gordon Setter Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Gordon Setter, originating in Scotland and developed by the Duke of Gordon, is the largest of the setter breeds and belongs to the Sporting/Gundog group; males typically stand 24-27 inches and weigh 55-80 pounds, with females slightly smaller. Bred to find and “set” upland game birds, they are devoted, intelligent, and steady dogs, affectionate with family and somewhat reserved with strangers, needing consistent training, socialization, and moderate daily exercise. Their distinctive long, silky black and tan coat with feathering sheds moderately and benefits from regular brushing several times a week, occasional trimming, and routine ear care; they are not considered hypoallergenic. Common health concerns include hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat, progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, and hypothyroidism.

Before You Choose a Gordon Setter Puppy
- Can I see health screening documentation for both parents?
- Are the parents registered with the AKC or relevant breed club?
- What is your return policy if the dog cannot remain in my home?
- Can I visit, meet the parents, and see where the puppies are raised?
- Do you provide a written health guarantee and vaccination records?

The OFA, working with each breed’s primary US parent club, sets the recommended testing list per breed. Recommendations may vary by country and region (US OFA CHIC, European FCI, UK Kennel Club, Australian National Kennel Council, etc.).
