About German Wirehaired Pointer Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The German Wirehaired Pointer, developed in Germany as a versatile hunting dog for upland birds and waterfowl, is a medium to large sporting breed known for its high energy, intelligence, and loyal yet sometimes aloof nature; it thrives with consistent training, ample daily exercise, and mental work. Sporting a distinctive harsh, weather resistant wire coat with bushy eyebrows and a beard, it sheds moderately and needs regular brushing with occasional hand stripping, plus routine ear checks after field or water work. Typically 22-26 inches tall and 45-70 pounds, it is hardy and athletic, excels in active homes, and is not hypoallergenic. Common health considerations include hip dysplasia, eye conditions (such as entropion or cataracts), and occasional ear infections; maintaining a lean weight, joint screening, and regular veterinary care are recommended.
