About Finnish Lapphund Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Finnish Lapphund, originating in Finland’s Lapland as a reindeer herding spitz for the Sámi people, is a medium sized Herding Group breed known for its friendly, calm, and alert nature with a tendency to be vocal. Compact yet sturdy, it typically stands 16-21 inches tall and weighs about 33-53 pounds, with a thick, weather resistant double coat, pricked ears, and a plumed tail. Moderate daily exercise, walks, play, and training games, keeps them content. They respond well to gentle, positive training and plenty of companionship. Grooming is moderate: brush several times a week (more during seasonal shedding) to manage loose hair, bathe as needed, and maintain nails, ears, and teeth; they shed heavily at times and are not hypoallergenic. Common health considerations include hip dysplasia and eye conditions such as progressive retinal atrophy and cataracts. They can be sensitive to heat, so provide shade and avoid strenuous activity in hot weather.
