About Estrela Mountain Dog Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Estrela Mountain Dog, originating in Portugal's Serra da Estrela range, is a large livestock guardian in the AKC Foundation Stock Service, historically bred to protect flocks from wolves and thieves. Males stand 25.5-28.5 inches and weigh 88-132 pounds, with females slightly smaller. The double coat comes in long or short varieties, requiring weekly brushing and more during heavy seasonal shedding. Loyal, calm, and naturally protective, they are devoted to family yet wary of strangers. They need moderate daily exercise and space, suiting experienced owners with secure yards and older children.
