About Dalmatian Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts

The Dalmatian, developed in Croatia's Dalmatia region and refined in England as a carriage and coach dog, is a medium to large breed in the AKC Non Sporting Group historically prized for trotting alongside horse drawn coaches. Males stand 22-24 inches and females 20-22 inches, typically weighing 45-70 pounds. The short, dense white coat with distinct black or liver spots is easy to maintain with weekly brushing, though shedding is constant and heavy year round. Outgoing, dignified, and sharply intelligent, Dalmatians need vigorous daily exercise, running, and mental work; they thrive in active families but require early socialization.

About these recommendations. PuppyReports surfaces the basic health screening recommendations for each breed in accordance with the principles established by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) program. The OFA, working with each breed’s primary US parent club, sets the recommended testing list per breed. Recommendations may vary by country and region (US OFA CHIC, European FCI, UK Kennel Club, Australian National Kennel Council, etc.). Always review current requirements with your breed’s parent club for your jurisdiction. Last reviewed: 2026-05-02.
