About Dachshund Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts

The Dachshund, originating in Germany as a fearless badger hunting hound, is a small Hound Group breed recognized for its long, low body, deep chest, and long ears. Found in standard (about 16-32 pounds) and miniature (11 pounds and under) sizes with smooth, longhaired, or wirehaired coats, they shed moderately and are not considered hypoallergenic. Bold, curious, and devoted with a streak of independence, they make lively companions and alert watchdogs when well socialized. Their energy level is moderate; daily walks and play suit them well, but their long backs call for limiting jumping and stairs and keeping them at a healthy weight. Grooming needs vary by coat: smooth coats need occasional brushing, longhaired require regular brushing to prevent tangles, and wirehaired benefit from periodic professional grooming; drooling is typically low. Common health concerns include back problems, obesity, dental issues, and some eye or knee conditions, so routine vet care and weight management are important.

Before You Choose a Dachshund Puppy

Questions to ask any Dachshund breeder
  1. Can I see health screening documentation for both parents?
  2. Are the parents registered with the AKC or relevant breed club?
  3. What is your return policy if the dog cannot remain in my home?
  4. Can I visit, meet the parents, and see where the puppies are raised?
  5. Do you provide a written health guarantee and vaccination records?

About these recommendations. PuppyReports surfaces the basic health screening recommendations for each breed in accordance with the principles established by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) program. The OFA, working with each breed’s primary US parent club, sets the recommended testing list per breed. Recommendations may vary by country and region (US OFA CHIC, European FCI, UK Kennel Club, Australian National Kennel Council, etc.). Always review current requirements with your breed’s parent club for your jurisdiction. Last reviewed: 2026-05-02.
