About Chow Chow Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts

The Chow Chow, originating in ancient China, is a medium to large spitz type breed in the AKC Non Sporting Group, historically used for hunting, guarding, cart pulling, and temple duty. Standing 17-20 inches tall and weighing 45-70 pounds, they are sturdy and lion like, with a distinctive blue black tongue, scowling expression, and stilted gait. The dense double coat comes in rough or smooth varieties and requires thorough brushing two to three times weekly to prevent matting. Dignified, aloof, and fiercely loyal, Chows need moderate daily exercise and suit experienced owners who provide early socialization and calm, consistent training.

About these recommendations. PuppyReports surfaces the basic health screening recommendations for each breed in accordance with the principles established by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) program. The OFA, working with each breed’s primary US parent club, sets the recommended testing list per breed. Recommendations may vary by country and region (US OFA CHIC, European FCI, UK Kennel Club, Australian National Kennel Council, etc.). Always review current requirements with your breed’s parent club for your jurisdiction. Last reviewed: 2026-05-02.
