About Chinook Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts

The Chinook, developed in early 20th century New Hampshire as a sled and draft dog, is a Working Group breed of medium to large size known for its calm, friendly, and devoted temperament. Athletic yet even tempered, Chinooks make affectionate family companions and typically get along well with children and other dogs, thriving on moderate daily exercise such as brisk walks, hikes, and engaging play. They have a dense, tawny double coat that sheds heavily, especially seasonally, so regular brushing is needed; they are not considered hypoallergenic. Adults generally stand about 22-26 inches tall and weigh roughly 50-90 pounds, with routine nail, ear, and dental care recommended. Common health considerations include issues seen in many larger working breeds, particularly hip dysplasia and some eye conditions, so maintaining a healthy weight and obtaining appropriate screenings from responsible breeders is advised.

About these recommendations. PuppyReports surfaces the basic health screening recommendations for each breed in accordance with the principles established by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) program. The OFA, working with each breed’s primary US parent club, sets the recommended testing list per breed. Recommendations may vary by country and region (US OFA CHIC, European FCI, UK Kennel Club, Australian National Kennel Council, etc.).
