The Chinese Shar Pei, originating in southern China, is a medium sized guardian in the Non Sporting Group, historically used for hunting, herding, and protecting farms. Dignified, loyal, and independent, they are devoted to family yet aloof with strangers, making early socialization essential. Typically 18-20 inches tall and 45-60 pounds, they feature loose wrinkles, a distinctive hippopotamus shaped muzzle, a blue black tongue, and a harsh short coat in horse or brush varieties. Grooming is moderate: weekly brushing, careful cleaning of skin folds to prevent infection, and routine ear and nail care. They need moderate daily exercise and suit experienced owners seeking a calm, devoted companion.
