About Chesapeake Bay Retriever Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever, originating in 19th‑century Maryland around the Chesapeake Bay, is a medium to large Sporting Group retriever bred to haul waterfowl from icy, rough waters; it is loyal, bold, and protective, affectionate with family yet often reserved with strangers, and benefits from early socialization and consistent training. Strong and high‑energy, Chessies need vigorous daily exercise and love swimming and retrieving. They have a dense, oily, water‑resistant double coat with a slight wave in shades of brown, sedge, or deadgrass; grooming is moderate, weekly brushing (more during seasonal sheds) and infrequent baths to preserve natural oils. They are not hypoallergenic. Typical size ranges about 55-80 pounds and 21-26 inches at the shoulder. Potential health concerns include hip and elbow dysplasia, inherited eye disease, bloat (a life‑threatening stomach condition), and occasionally degenerative myelopathy; responsible breeders screen for these.
