About Caucasian Shepherd Dog Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts

The Caucasian Shepherd Dog, originating in the Caucasus Mountain region of Russia and Georgia, is a massive livestock guardian in the AKC Foundation Stock Service, historically bred to protect sheep and property from wolves and bears. Males stand 27-30 inches and weigh 110-170 pounds, with females slightly smaller, carrying a dense weather resistant double coat in gray, fawn, rust, or pied patterns. Brush two to three times weekly and expect heavy seasonal shedding. Fearless, confident, and deeply devoted, they are independent thinkers requiring experienced owners, early socialization, and moderate daily exercise. Best suited to rural homes with space rather than apartments or households with unfamiliar visitors.

About these recommendations. PuppyReports surfaces the basic health screening recommendations for each breed in accordance with the principles established by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) program. The OFA, working with each breed’s primary US parent club, sets the recommended testing list per breed. Recommendations may vary by country and region (US OFA CHIC, European FCI, UK Kennel Club, Australian National Kennel Council, etc.). Always review current requirements with your breed’s parent club for your jurisdiction. Last reviewed: 2026-05-02.
