About Catahoula Leopard Dog Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts

The Catahoula Leopard Dog, originating in Louisiana and recognized as the state's official dog, was developed by early settlers to track, herd, and hunt wild hogs and cattle across the challenging swamp and bayou terrain. Currently part of the AKC's Foundation Stock Service, this rugged working breed stands 22-26 inches tall and weighs 50-95 pounds, with a striking single layered short coat displaying merle patterning in blue, red, and black along with piercing glass or cracked eyes. Grooming is minimal, requiring weekly brushing, routine nail trims, and regular ear checks. Intelligent, independent, and intensely loyal, Catahoulas need substantial daily exercise and a confident owner, thriving with active, experienced families who can channel their strong working drive.
