About Canaan Dog Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts

The Canaan Dog, originating in Israel as a versatile desert herder and vigilant watchdog, is a medium sized member of the Herding Group known for its alert, intelligent, and independent nature balanced by strong loyalty to family. Typically 19-24 inches tall and 35-55 pounds, it has a wedge shaped head, erect ears, a bushy tail that often curls over the back, and a weather resistant double coat in various colors. Exercise needs are moderate, daily walks and mental enrichment suit them well, and grooming is easy: weekly brushing most of the year with more frequent brushing during seasonal shedding; they are not hypoallergenic and usually drool very little. Early socialization and consistent, positive training help manage their natural wariness of strangers and strong watchdog instincts. Generally healthy and long lived, common concerns can include hip dysplasia, thyroid issues, and eye conditions such as progressive retinal atrophy, for which responsible breeders screen.
