About Bullmastiff Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Bullmastiff, developed in 19th‑century England by crossing Mastiffs and Bulldogs to help gamekeepers deter poachers, is a large Working Group guardian known for its calm, loyal nature and natural protectiveness. Adults typically stand 24-27 inches tall and weigh 100-130 pounds, with a short, dense coat in fawn, red, or brindle and a distinctive black mask. Though low energy, they need daily walks, early socialization, and consistent, positive training. They do best with secure fencing and care in hot weather. Grooming is simple, regular brushing and occasional baths, but expect heavy drooling and light to moderate shedding; they are not hypoallergenic. Common health concerns include hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat, heart disease, thyroid issues, certain cancers, and eye problems, so maintaining a healthy weight and routine vet checks is important.

When researching Bullmastiff breeders, ask for documentation of health screening on both parents. Ethical breeders test for breed appropriate conditions through OFA, PennHIP, or breed club specified DNA panels before breeding.
Before You Choose a Bullmastiff Puppy
- Can I see health screening documentation for both parents?
- Are the parents registered with the AKC or relevant breed club?
- What is your return policy if the dog cannot remain in my home?
- Can I visit, meet the parents, and see where the puppies are raised?
- Do you provide a written health guarantee and vaccination records?
