About Boykin Spaniel Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Boykin Spaniel, developed in early 1900s South Carolina as a compact gundog for hunting waterfowl and wild turkey from small boats, is a friendly, eager, high energy member of the Sporting Group. Medium in size (about 14-18 inches tall and 25-40 pounds), it has a sturdy build and a medium, wavy or curly solid brown coat with feathering, expressive amber eyes, and floppy ears, and is an enthusiastic swimmer and retriever. Affectionate and trainable, Boykins thrive with active families and need daily vigorous exercise and mental engagement; early training and socialization help channel their drive. Grooming is moderate: brush several times a week to prevent mats in the feathering, trim as needed, and keep ears clean; shedding is light to moderate and the breed is not hypoallergenic. Health considerations can include hip dysplasia, ear infections, and inherited eye issues; some lines may carry exercise induced collapse, so responsible breeding and screening are important.
