About Boxer Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts

The Boxer, originating in Germany as a versatile working and guardian breed, is a medium to large, muscular dog known for its playful, people oriented temperament, alertness, and protective nature. With a short, smooth coat in fawn or brindle often with white markings and a distinctive square muzzle, Boxers are high energy athletes who need daily vigorous exercise, mental stimulation, and consistent, positive training. Grooming is simple, regular brushing and nail care, but they shed year round and may drool; they are not hypoallergenic. As a brachycephalic breed, they are heat sensitive and should avoid strenuous activity in hot weather. Common health concerns include hip dysplasia, heart disease (especially arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy and aortic stenosis), certain cancers such as mast cell tumors, and degenerative myelopathy; routine veterinary screening is recommended. Typically 21-25 inches tall and about 55-80 pounds, Boxers are classified in the Working Group and make affectionate, enthusiastic family companions when well socialized.

Before You Choose a Boxer Puppy

Questions to ask any Boxer breeder
  1. Can I see health screening documentation for both parents?
  2. Are the parents registered with the AKC or relevant breed club?
  3. What is your return policy if the dog cannot remain in my home?
  4. Can I visit, meet the parents, and see where the puppies are raised?
  5. Do you provide a written health guarantee and vaccination records?

About these recommendations. PuppyReports surfaces the basic health screening recommendations for each breed in accordance with the principles established by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) program. The OFA, working with each breed’s primary US parent club, sets the recommended testing list per breed. Recommendations may vary by country and region (US OFA CHIC, European FCI, UK Kennel Club, Australian National Kennel Council, etc.). Always review current requirements with your breed’s parent club for your jurisdiction. Last reviewed: 2026-05-02.
