About Border Collie Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts

The Border Collie, a medium sized member of the Herding Group from the England, Scotland border, was developed to gather and drive sheep and is celebrated for its exceptional intelligence, responsiveness, and tireless work ethic. Athletic and agile with a weather resistant double coat (smooth or rough) in many colors, they typically stand about 18-22 inches and weigh 30-55 pounds; they shed moderately with heavier seasonal sheds and drool very little. They thrive on daily vigorous exercise and rich mental stimulation, herding, agility, advanced training, and interactive play, and need consistent companionship to prevent boredom related behaviors. Grooming is moderate, with weekly brushing (more during shedding seasons) and routine nail, ear, and dental care. Generally affectionate and loyal with families yet often reserved with strangers, they are not hypoallergenic and may be prone to health issues such as hip dysplasia, Collie Eye Anomaly, progressive retinal atrophy, epilepsy, and certain drug sensitivities (MDR1).

About these recommendations. PuppyReports surfaces the basic health screening recommendations for each breed in accordance with the principles established by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) program. The OFA, working with each breed’s primary US parent club, sets the recommended testing list per breed. Recommendations may vary by country and region (US OFA CHIC, European FCI, UK Kennel Club, Australian National Kennel Council, etc.). Always review current requirements with your breed’s parent club for your jurisdiction. Last reviewed: 2026-05-02.
