About Bluetick Coonhound Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Bluetick Coonhound, developed in the United States from French and English scenthounds, is a medium to large Hound Group breed created to trail raccoons and other game by scent; it is affectionate and loyal with family, sociable with other dogs, independent and determined, and known for a loud, musical bay. Typically 22-27 inches tall and 45-80 pounds, it has a sleek, muscular build, long ears, and a short, dense, blue ticked coat. Grooming is straightforward, weekly brushing, regular ear cleaning, and routine nail and dental care, and shedding is generally low; drooling can be moderate. This high energy breed needs substantial daily exercise and mental stimulation (scent work, long walks, secure fenced play) and should be leashed outdoors due to a strong prey drive. Not hypoallergenic, the Bluetick may be prone to issues seen in large hounds such as hip dysplasia, ear infections, and hypothyroidism, so regular veterinary screening is advised.
