About Berger Picard Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts

The Berger Picard is a medium sized herding breed from France’s Picardy region, developed to drive and guard sheep; it’s bright, independent, and athletic, affectionate with family yet often reserved with strangers, making a loyal but sensible watchdog. Recognizable by its lean, rustic build, large erect ears, and rough, shaggy double coat in fawn or brindle, it typically stands 21.5, 25.5 inches tall and weighs about 50-70 pounds. Grooming is moderate, weekly brushing and occasional baths keep the coat tidy, and clipping is unnecessary, though it sheds heavily seasonally and is not hypoallergenic. With a moderate energy level, it thrives on daily exercise and mental engagement (walks, hikes, herding games, agility) plus early socialization and consistent, positive training. Generally hardy, the breed can be prone to hip dysplasia and hereditary eye issues such as progressive retinal atrophy, so routine screening is advised.
