About Belgian Sheepdog Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Belgian Sheepdog (Groenendael) is a medium to large herding breed from Belgium developed for sheep work and farm guarding, now also seen in police work and dog sports; it is highly intelligent, loyal, and alert, often reserved with strangers, and thrives on training and plenty of activity. Athletic and square built with erect ears and a long, dense black double coat, it sheds heavily, especially seasonally, and needs thorough brushing several times a week; it is not hypoallergenic. This high energy breed requires vigorous daily exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and well behaved. Adults typically stand about 22-26 inches tall and weigh 45-75 pounds. Common health considerations include hip and elbow dysplasia, eye issues, epilepsy, and bloat; due to the dark coat, they can be sensitive to heat, so provide shade and water in warm weather.
