About Belgian Laekenois Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts

The Belgian Laekenois, one of the four Belgian Shepherd varieties from Belgium, is a medium sized herding and guarding breed known for its alert, loyal, and intelligent temperament; it bonds closely with family, can be reserved with strangers, and thrives with active, experienced owners. Athletic with erect ears and a distinctive rough, tousled fawn to mahogany coat with a dark overlay, it belongs to the Herding Group and has high energy requiring daily vigorous exercise, structured training, early socialization, and ample mental stimulation. Its wiry coat needs regular brushing and occasional hand stripping to maintain texture; shedding is low and the breed is not hypoallergenic. Health considerations include hip and elbow dysplasia and eye conditions such as progressive retinal atrophy and cataracts, so responsible screening is recommended.

About these recommendations. PuppyReports surfaces the basic health screening recommendations for each breed in accordance with the principles established by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) program. The OFA, working with each breed’s primary US parent club, sets the recommended testing list per breed. Recommendations may vary by country and region (US OFA CHIC, European FCI, UK Kennel Club, Australian National Kennel Council, etc.).
