About Beagle Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Beagle, a small to medium scenthound from England bred for rabbit and hare hunting, is a Hound Group breed celebrated for its merry, friendly, and curious temperament. Compact and sturdy at about 13-15 inches tall and 20-30 pounds, it has a short, dense coat (often tricolor), long low set ears, and expressive eyes. High energy and scent driven, Beagles need daily exercise, mental enrichment, and secure fencing. They can be vocal with baying. Grooming is low maintenance, weekly brushing with moderate year round shedding that increases seasonally, plus routine ear cleaning and nail trims. They are low droolers but not hypoallergenic. Common health concerns include obesity, ear infections, hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and hypothyroidism, so regular vet care and weight management are important.

When researching Beagle breeders, ask for documentation of health screening on both parents. Ethical breeders test for breed appropriate conditions through OFA, PennHIP, or breed club specified DNA panels before breeding.
Before You Choose a Beagle Puppy
- Can I see health screening documentation for both parents?
- Are the parents registered with the AKC or relevant breed club?
- What is your return policy if the dog cannot remain in my home?
- Can I visit, meet the parents, and see where the puppies are raised?
- Do you provide a written health guarantee and vaccination records?
Screened Beagle breeders on PuppyReports have submitted documentation, responded to the platform, and maintain an active PuppyReports™ Card. Research any breeder before you make a commitment.

The OFA, working with each breed’s primary US parent club, sets the recommended testing list per breed. Recommendations may vary by country and region (US OFA CHIC, European FCI, UK Kennel Club, Australian National Kennel Council, etc.).
