About Basset Hound Puppies, Breeders & DogFacts
The Basset Hound, a French origin scent hound in the Hound Group, was bred to trail small game at a slow, steady pace using its exceptional nose; it’s calm, friendly, and somewhat stubborn, with a low energy level suited to relaxed households. Medium in size but heavy boned, it stands about 13-15 inches and typically weighs 40-65 pounds, featuring short legs, a long body, long ears, and loose skin. Grooming is moderate: the short coat sheds year round and benefits from weekly brushing; expect some drool, and clean ears and skin folds regularly. They are not hypoallergenic. Daily walks and mental enrichment are important, along with weight control and care to protect the back from excessive jumping. Common health concerns include obesity, ear infections, skin and eye issues (such as eyelid problems), joint or back strain, and bloat, so regular veterinary care is recommended.

- Can I see health screening documentation for both parents?
- Are the parents registered with the AKC or relevant breed club?
- What is your return policy if the dog cannot remain in my home?
- Can I visit, meet the parents, and see where the puppies are raised?
- Do you provide a written health guarantee and vaccination records?
